Sir John Henry Smythe

Sir John Henry Smythe was born in Sierra Leone, in Africa, and grew up to be a truly inspiring man. During World War II, he became a brave pilot in the Royal Air Force, flying dangerous missions to help protect his country. After the war, he worked as a lawyer and used his voice to stand up for fairness and justice.

Sir John showed courage not only in battle but in life — always working to help others and fight for what is right. His life reminds us that courage can mean standing up for what is fair, even when it is hard.

Thame Museum honours Sir John Henry Smythe’s memory with displays that tell his story and celebrate his remarkable journey. They keep his legacy alive so that everyone, especially children, can learn from his courage, determination, and dedication to making the world better.
